988: Rewiring hope, one call at a time
As a parent whose son lives with suicidal ideation and has almost died by suicide in the past, I can't overstate how important initiatives like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline are. Every day, I wake up grateful that my son is still here, but I also live with the constant awareness of how fragile mental health is, and the importance of advocating for the education around it. I'm grateful, too, for his siblings' strength and support of him while they navigate through life's challenges.
This lifeline offers immediate, impactful, judgment-free support 24/7, providing meaningful help -- I'm moved by the efforts to make this resource more accessible to college students. Having the 988 number readily available on student IDs could be the difference between a moment of crisis and a moment of connection.
I also like that the focus is on local response and follow-up services — the journey doesn't end when you reach out for help. The ongoing support, the check-ins, the local resources - these are what help build a sustainable path.
As we mark the second anniversary of 988, please support these policy bills. Whether you're directly affected by mental health challenges or not, this is about creating a safety net for our entire community.
For my son, for your loved ones, for anyone who might need it - our voices and actions effect change.
